I need some help!

Hey all you blog readers out there! I need some advice. So far I have four quilts in my collection that I am very happy with (4 out of 8 isn't bad...) but could definitely use some feedback. Tell me which quilt or quilts you like best and why. Leave a comment. Don't be shy.

I'm trying to work up the courage to submit my work for Apartment Therapy's Design Showcase. I feel a little strange thinking of myself as a designer and stranger still considering entering something like this but it feels like the right thing to do (even if it is the scariest scary thing ever). The deadline is coming up really soon so please please give me feedback. I need to choose one of these to submit:

1. Paint Chip Quilt in Blue: 25 hand-dyed blocks gradating from bright blue to black, dark to light.  100% cotton, pieced and then quilted in radiating X formations.

2. Paint Chip Quilt in Orange: 25 hand-dyed blocks gradating from light yellow to dark red with all oranges in between. 100% cotton, pieced and then quilted in straight horizontal lines.
 3. Skyscape Quilt in Yellow and Purple. 23 hand-dyed strips gradating from dark purple to light yellow, then dark green to light green. 100% cotton, pieced, then quilted in horizontal straight lines.
4. Skyscape Quilt in Rust and Blue. 21 hand-dyed strips gradating from dark blue to light blue with rose in between and then from light blue to dark rust. 100% cotton, pieced, then quilted in horizontal straight lines.
Ok. Those are the quilts. Please let me know what you think and which one I should choose!!

  1. The Paint Chips in Orange just make me happy and so that's my favorite. I too am obssessed with paint chip even though I don't re-paint my walls ever. Maybe that's why I paint canvas....
But for designer style, I'd have to go with Skyscape Quilt in Yellow and Purple. It, to me, smacks of class and awesomeness.

  2. Kimberly - I love #1, especially the quilting; #2, beautiful colors; #4 and then #3. But, of course, I love them all.
Do not hesitate to enter one......go for it!

  3. I'm in love with the fourth one.

The color's are unexpected which is why I enjoy is so much.

  4. The science geek side of me really likes both paint chip quilts, with a slight preference for the blue/black just because I like blues. I actually think those two would look pretty cool hung up corner to corner, with the orange/red one below and to the right of the blue/black one, with the corners just touching.

However, there's something about the last one that I _really_ like, but I can't give you a good reason why. I guess I just really like the palette, and there's something clever about the arrangement of the colors I can't put my finger on. Great work, Kim, and good luck!

  5. Kim I have no artistic ability whatsoever and I don't have an eye for color or design - in fact, I have nothing to base my opinions on except what I like and I love #2 the most - the colors just light up and it's cheerful and warm. I also love #1 - I love blues and I especially like the stitching in that one. My next favorite is #4 because it reminds me of a sunset and I love that time of day! Those are my very unprofessional opinions! I'm so proud of you for taking chances and risks - good luck!!!!!

  6. I vote for skyscape in rust and blue. The colors are beautiful and unexpected, and the gradations are better than the yellow and purple. I think that this design will have the broadest appeal. Best of luck. Let us know when we can vote for you.

  7. Kim, I love all of the quilts, but I especially like #2 and 4. My favorite is #4 because I would have never thought thoase colors would work together but they really look awesome. It is really artsy and I think it would get lots of attention and compliments on display in a home! Great!! - Allison Klein

  8. It's so hard to pick one! I'm partial to blue and think the X formation is clever and interesting. Personally, I really like Skyscape Quilt in Yellow and Purple because it's complicated yet simplistic, if that makes any sense. I feel like i'm sitting on a cliff watching the sunset. Rust and Blue is pretty too - reminds me of a stormy day but then beyond there is a peek of the blue sky under the clouds. Do I get one? haha j/k :)

  9. Reading the other responses, I don't think this will help very much. But, I am partial to first skyscape with the orange Paint Chips as a close second.

  12. I like #1 - partial to blue but really the transition of the colors.

  13. The block series demonstrate a true knowledge of chroma and color theory. The stripey have a "lower end" color aesthetic, in my opinion. For me, the block series has a more sophisticated color technique.
